Dancer – Alana Cowie

Dancer – Alana Cowie

I first saw Alana perform at the Can You Dance Convention in 2017. From the moment I saw her I knew what an honour it would be to work with her. In 2019 I got my wish when she contacted me to collaborate on a studio dance portrait session.

Before the session we discussed what outfit’s she had and what would work best based on the movements she was going to perform. Next, we considered the lighting and we agreed upon a darker dramatic feel emphasising the shadows in the images.

Alana Bio:

What age did you start dancing?

10 years old

Which schools or companies have you danced with in the past?

After doing gymnastics for 4 years I joined NADA (North Aberdeenshire Dance Academy) and stayed here until I was 17.  I then left home and moved to Cheltenham, England to pursue further dance training. I ended up training at Morea Performing Arts for 3 years which prepared me to enter the world as a professional dancer. Upon leaving Morea’s I moved to Manchester and became part of ‘Emergence’ – an apprentice dance contemporary company under the artistic direction of Joss Arnott. We completed a UK tour that ran for 2 months. I also completed my postgraduate Diploma in Dance and Professional practices graduating this July with a distinction

Who do you dance for now?

During my time at Emergence I signed to Becky Barrett Management who have helped me gain my first professional contract with Royal Caribbean cruises.  I will initially be going to Miami to rehearse with them then joining Liberty of the Seas cruising for 9 months to perform Saturday Night Fever. This is my favourite achievement in dance as I have always wanted to work as a dancer on a cruise

What styles of dance do you enjoy most?

I don’t think I have a favourite type of dance as every type always gives me something new to learn.  I do, however, love putting on a pair of heels and going to an open commercial class and just having the time of my life

Who is your favourite dancer/performer?

My favourite dancer would probably be Sharon June who teaches in London. I think the way she teaches allows everyone to grow in confidence and she is amazing

What did you enjoy most about your photoshoot?

I’ve done a few shoots now with Paul from Centre Stage and every time he amazes me. He always manages to catch moments so beautifully and makes you feel so at ease. We always have a good laugh and take great pictures. He gives you artistic license to try anything out but he always has ideas as well making the process a collaboration. I look forward to doing more shoots with him in the future!
